Davenport Injury Mystery Solved?

The Post Gazette is reporting that Najeh Davenport was injured during an acupuncture treatment away from the Steelers’ medical facility. Apparently something went wrong that left his foot swollen and him unable to play last Sunday night.

The Steelers examined Davenport on Monday and determined that he should be ready to go against the Patriots. That means former Steelers running back Verron Haynes, who worked out for the team, won’t be resigned.

I still don’t know what to believe. We’ve heard a few different stories as to just what happened. First, we heard that Davenport got into a fight at a night club and was beat up. Then we heard that he was actually injured on an elliptical machine. Now we hear that it was an acupuncture procedure gone wrong. Whatever it is, something doesn’t seem quite right. They were tight lipped as to what happened for so long, and just now it is coming out that it was from an acupuncture treatment. I’m not sure that is something that they needed to be so secretive about.

(Update: Apparently, the final word is that he injured the foot on an elliptical machine, and then it swelled up after he received acupuncture treatment .)

Okobi, Haynes Lead Steelers Final Cuts

The Steelers have made their last cuts this off-season, finalizing their 2008 roster. The two biggest names are center Chukky Okobi and running back Verron Haynes.

Three of the Steelers’ 2007 draft picks were also cut - fourth round pick defensive end Ryan McBean, fifth round pick guard Cameron Stephenson and seventh round pick wide receiver Dallas Baker.

Center Marvin Philip, defensive end Shaun Nua and special teams ace Chidi Iwuoma were also cut. As well as fullback John Kuhn, quarterback Bryan Randall, linebackers Rian Wallace and Ron Stanley, receivers Walter Young and Gerran Walker, tight ends Cody Boyd and Jon Dekker, nose tackle Scott Paxson, cornerbacks Anthony Madison and Jovon Johnson, and safeties Grant Mason and Mike Lorello, and tackles Jason Capizzi and Brandon Torrey.

Perhaps the most hotly contested position, running back, is now finalized. Keeping Dan Kreider was a smart move, especially with the offensive line still questionable. New backs Carey Davis and Gary Russell provide youth to the position.

An interesting aside, the Steelers have four total backs that were undrafted- Willie Parker, Dan Kreider, Carey Davis, and Gary Russell.

The battle for the center position was also sorted out, with Coach Mike Tomlin apparently liking what he saw from Sean Mahan more then Chukky Okobi. Furthermore, center Marvin Philip was also cut, leaving some serious question as to the depth behind center.

Important Night for Steelers Running Backs

Tonight’s pre-season game versus the Philadelphia Eagles is an important one for many players hoping to make the team. But perhaps the most hotly contested positions are both halfback and fullback, where some veterans might be ousted.

Willie Parker is, of course, safe, but after him all spots seem to be open. Even Dan kreider seems in danger of losing his job. New comers Carey Davis and Gary Russell are making a strong case for the team, and Najeh Davenport and especially Kevan Barlow have been unimpressive.

Dan Kreider
Will Kreider Still be Leading the Charge this Season?

Kevan Barlow likely has no shot of making the team. He went from an interesting offseason signing to forgotten before the pre-season games even started. There were reports that he looked bad even in the training camp practices. Barlow probably wouldn’t make the team even if there wasn’t the log jam at the position.

Najeh Davenport will likely make the team, but he can strengthen his case with a better showing. For a big back, he is not great at moving the pile. Davenport’s strengths lie in pass catching and decent return skills. He shows just enough to make the team but is no long term answer for the Steelers.

Verron Haynes is another question mark. He is a talented third down back but his problem has always been injuries. Without all the good candidates, he would probably make the team, but the odds may be against him right now.

Carey Davis and Gary Russell have both been very impressive. There is a real chance both can make the team. Russell shows great vision and drive and Davis is a great blocker who is also nifty on his feet. Both players seem to be excellent pick ups for the Steelers, and if they make the team there would be four undrafted backs on the Steelers (if Krieder isn’t cut).

Carey Davis, in particular, may be a real threat to Dan Krieder. I am a huge Krieder supporter but the team seems to be moving away from pounding the ball behind a fullback. They have been using the fullback less and less and because Kreider is mostly one dimensional (although the thing he does well, blocking, he is one of the best at) Kreider faces the possibility of being cut. With Davis being a better runner, the team might opt for him instead because he can hold his own in blocking and also run and catch the ball. As much as I like Davis, personally I just think you can’t get rid of a guy like Kreider- just ask Ray Lewis about his blocking skills.

Steelers Quick Links 04/22/07

  • From the Trib’s Steelers notebook:
    • - Coach Dick LeBeau doesn’t expect to miss a beat with James Harrison in place of Joey Porter
      - Despite being a top candidate, Sean Mahan has yet to practice at center, only getting time in at guard so far.
      - Chris Gardocki hasn’t punted yet because of a minor back injury
      - Coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t ruled out resigning running back Verron Haynes
  • Coach Mike Tomlin used the mini-camp to evaluate the current team before the draft.
  • Willie Parker seems to be ok with sharing the load with a 2nd running back.
  • Ike Taylor, Ricardo Colclough and Bryant McFadden want to impress Coach Tomlin.
