What’s up with Troy Polamalu?

Troy Polamalu said recently that he was not in position on many of the big plays from the Broncos game:

Polamalu took responsibility for being “misaligned on a big play,” and said the others were “probably my fault as well, the big ones, yeah.

Troy goes on to say that it happens every game and it is just part of football. Which is true, but it has been happening a lot lately. Not just being misaligned but also missing the same big plays from previous seasons.

Unfortunately, it has been a trend that has continued over from last season even though he was still voted into the Pro Bowl. However, most Steelers fans would begrudgingly admit that he was probably voted in more on his name then his play considering he missed significant time and had lower production.

His 2006 stats weren’t too far off of his 2005 stats (his best season as a Pro) especially if you factor in the three games that he missed. But stats, of course, don’t tell the whole story. Troy just hasn’t been the same disruptive force as in 2005 and parts of 2004. A large part of his mystique is his disruptive quality, lining up in different spots, blitzing, fake blitzing, dropping into coverage, and just all around confusing the offense as he runs around like the Tasmanian Devil.

Steelers score on all three phases, dominate again

It has been pretty easy being a Steelers fan so far this season. We’ve had some nice Sunday afternoons, watching our offense light up the scoreboard and our defense light up opposing teams. No near heart-attack educing games yet- though you know they will come eventually.

It also feels pretty good watching the Steelers score a touchdown on offense, defense, and special teams. Now that’s production.

Of course, it wasn’t all good. The Steelers did trail for their first time this season… that is for about 9 seconds before Allen Rossum returned the ensuing kick off 98 yards for a touchdown. Trading for Rossum just might be one of Tomlin’s best moves so far with the team.

Joking aside, there was some bad along with the good. Let’s take a look:

Steelers Coordinators Excel So Far Under Tomlin’s Relaxed Approach

I hate having to preface all my posts right now with “It is still early but…” or “the Steelers haven’t really been tested yet but..” however, it goes with the territory of only having played two games against underperforming teams. I’ll probably be able to stop saying it if they put up another good performance against the 49′ers, but for one last time:

It is still early but, Mike Tomlin’s more hands-off approach to his coordinators might be paying dividends. The Pittsburgh media had two articles this week explaining how Tomlin is letting his coaches do their thing and not micromanaging.

Jeff Mroz over at NBCSports.com has an article about how Ben Roethlisberger is emerging as an elite quarterback. I guess he agrees that Roethlisberger’s stats don’t lie.

Hines Ward responds to the allegations that he stole money from the part-owner of his restaurant.

Coach Mike Tomlin turns defensive wizard Dick LeBeau loose.

JJ Cooper does a great job of breaking down the Steelers offensive line play, something a lot of us miss. Check out Cooper’s take on the offensive line from the Bills game.

Welcome to your 2007 Steelers

The Steelers open their season tomorrow in Cleveland against the Browns. With a new coaching staff and new philosophies there could be a different Steelers team on the field then we are used to. The pre-season is over and it is time to see if it has all be talk, or if the big bad Steelers are back.

The Much Anticipated New Steelers Offense- Now that the pre-season is over with, it is time to play for real. No more generic formations and plays. Three tight end sets, Carey Davis leading the way for Willie Parker, the ball getting thrown all over the field… Let’s finally see this new offense in motion.
